Helly Hansen Rain Gear, Work Boots & Welding Gloves: A 7-Step Rush Order Checklist

If you've ever had a site supervisor call at 4:00 PM because the forecast says rain and a crew needs waterproof gear by 6:00 AM, you know what this checklist is for. It's not a complete PPE course. It's the practical list I use when an order has to move fast and can't come back.

I coordinate rush orders for industrial and municipal clients. Most of those orders aren't emergencies in the medical sense. They're predictable events—weather, a new contract, someone's boots splitting on Monday—that got pushed to the last minute. The steps below work for rain gear, work boots, and welding gloves. Use them in order.

The 7-Step Checklist

Step 1: Confirm the task and hazard before you search brands

Before you type "helly hansen workwear rain gear" or "best welding gloves," answer four questions:

  • What exactly is the worker doing?
  • Where are they doing it?
  • What are they already wearing?
  • What does a failure cost?

Rain gear for walking to a truck is not the same as rain gear for a line crew near traffic. Helly Hansen makes both basic waterproof jackets and hi-vis workwear rain gear. The hi-vis version can meet EN ISO 20471 if the site requires it. The basic one might not. Neither is bad. They're made for different jobs.

Same for welding gloves. A pair of leather gauntlet gloves is the typical starting point for MIG or stick welding, but TIG needs more dexterity. Check the job. Don't buy "heat resistant" when the job needs "welding specific."

Boots? This is where I hear questions like, "Are Timberlands good work boots?" Sometimes, yes. If the job is light warehouse duty or driving, a comfortable Timberland can be perfectly fine. But if the site requires impact/compression-rated toe protection, you need ASTM F2413 on the label, not just a solid brand. Same with DeWalt work boots—they're a common option, but the label matters more than the name.

Step 2: Nail the sizing—including women's fit

The most frustrating part of rush PPE orders: the same mistakes happen every time because someone wants to skip sizing. If you order rainwear for a mixed-gender crew by "small, medium, large," you're going to get returns.

Check brand size charts against actual measurements. For women, a unisex jacket has a different shoulder-to-chest fit. If I need an item in women's sizing, I search for "helly hansen raincoat womens" and use the brand's women's chart. It's not a smaller men's jacket. It has differently placed shoulders, arms, hips, and hood. Make the wrong call and you'll lose time.

Step 3: Check certification and ratings before looking at the price

I'm not a safety engineer, so I can't speak to every specific code requirement. What I can tell you from a procurement perspective is that if the standard isn't listed on the product page, it's a red flag.

Step 4: Do a total-cost comparison, not a sticker-price comparison

You can save ten minutes by skipping specs, then lose a day to the wrong order. Here's why the extra ten minutes pays for itself.

Suppose you have two rainwear options. Option A is $480 plus $130 in expedited freight plus two hours of your time checking whether it will arrive and fit. Option B is $650 delivered, certified, and returnable. Option A looks cheaper. It's not. Its total cost is higher because the freight, the checking time, and the risk of failure are all real costs.

When I compared two quotes like that side by side—same need, different suppliers, one cheap and one all-in—I finally understood why total cost matters. I now calculate TCO before comparing any vendor quotes:

Price + freight + time spent checking + returns + risk of a wrong product.

To be fair, a higher all-in quote can still be wrong for the job. The point is not "buy the expensive one." The point is to compare the total cost of solving the problem, including what it costs if it doesn't work.

Step 5: Check compatibility with the rest of their PPE

The new rain jacket needs to fit over the harness. The welding gloves need to fit under fire-resistant shirt cuffs. The boots need to work with gaiters the crew already wears. If this doesn't happen, the person finds a way to skip the gear.

Compatibility also means heat. The best rain jacket in the world is wrong if the crew is doing heavy physical work and overheating. Breathable rainwear exists.   • Does this work with what they're already wearing?

Receiving a box is not the end of a rush order. It's the start of the final check. Before you open it, know who inspects the order, what happens if a size is wrong, and how long the vendor takes to replace it.

In March 2024, a client needed rain gear in 36 hours. We got it in 29. Then we realized we hadn't ordered replacement reflective tape. The gear couldn't be used until we had the tape. What looked like a saved order became another scramble. That's the kind of detail a checklist should catch.

Also ask the vendor to put the expedite fee in writing before you commit. One invoice with the fee built in is easier than a surprise.

Step 7: Save your standard specs before you need them again

Document the answer after you've matched brands, sizes, and certifications to the job. The next time someone says "we need rain gear tomorrow," you won't have to redo the research. You'll just copy the approved spec and add the size counts.

Write down:

  • Task and hazard type
  • Approved brand/item and the standard it meets
  • Sizes measured for each worker
  • Supplier contact, including after-hours number
  • The review step you stuck to

Most clients don't have this. The first rush order takes hours. The second takes 20 minutes. Preparation is the closest thing to a magic shortcut I've found in this industry.

Quick Notes

If you're still asking "are Timberlands good work boots," here's a practical answer: check the model. Some Timberlands are lifestyle boots with no safety rating. Some are work-rated. The label is the answer—not the logo.

For welding gloves, buy for the actual process, not the vague phrase "welding gloves." TIG, MIG, and heavy stick welding need different cuff length and material. "Leather" alone isn't enough.

And if you're buying women's rainwear, use the brand's size chart. A "women's" Helly Hansen raincoat is not a men's raincoat with a pink zipper. It's a different fit. Get the measurements and go from there.
